Infrastructure gaps found at EMRS Pahamsyiem during Meghalaya Assembly panel inspection

SHILLONG, Mar 25 2026 (RNS).

A Meghalaya Assembly committee has flagged key infrastructure gaps at the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh, following an on-site inspection aimed at assessing the institution’s readiness and facilities.
The inspection was carried out by the Assembly’s Committee on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), led by Chairman Gabriel Wahlang. He was accompanied by committee member Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem.
During the visit to the school located in Nongpoh, authorities highlighted several early-stage challenges affecting infrastructure and operations. Among the major concerns raised was the inadequate condition of the girls’ hostel, which currently lacks essential facilities necessary for students’ welfare.
Speaking to the media, Wahlang said the findings from the inspection would be compiled into a detailed report to be submitted to the state government for prompt intervention. He stressed that addressing these issues at an early stage is crucial for ensuring that EMRS institutions meet quality standards.
He further noted that the experience and lessons from the Pahamsyiem school would help shape the development of similar institutions across Meghalaya. “This is the first fully functional EMRS in the state, and we aim to replicate its strengths while addressing existing gaps,” he added.
The Eklavya Model Residential Schools are a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, designed to provide quality middle and secondary education to Scheduled Tribe students, especially in remote and underserved regions.
