The International School Bangalore recently hosted a compelling Middle School drama production titled “Land of Cards,” an adaptation inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s celebrated Bengali dance drama, Taasher Desh. The play transports the audience into a dystopian reality governed by rigid rules and absolute conformity, where emotional expression is strictly prohibited. The narrative follows the journey of a curious Prince and his companion as they infiltrate this clockwork kingdom, ultimately challenging its stagnant social order and introducing the concepts of joy, imagination, and individual agency to its inhabitants.
The production was noted for its vibrant execution, blending elements of humor and music to convey a profound message regarding freedom and courage. Student performers effectively portrayed the transition from a mechanical, rule-bound existence to a life defined by bold self-expression and kindness. By reinterpreting Tagore’s classic work for a modern stage, the performers at The International School Bangalore highlighted the enduring relevance of cultural literature in exploring themes of social liberation and the human spirit.
